What Does the Bible Say About Finances?
There are over 1,000 scriptures dealing with money or financial issues.  Over half of the 39 parables Jesus used involve financial issues as a teaching tool.  There are more scriptures about finances than most any topic.  Understanding the Lord’s view about finances can prevent us from making very costly mistakes.  God provides a “road map” for our finances in His Word.

All Scripture quotations are taken from the New American Standard Bible or New International Version.

 Commitment [Return to Top]

God has called us to live a life completely committed to Him. What you value most is usually where your spiritual commitment lies. What you value is where your focus is and also where your heart is. All the things we possess really have no importance. We should use our things and possessions God has given us for the kingdom of God.

When you are called to make a sacrifice, you must decide where your commitment is. You cannot serve both God and money.

Psalm 37:4-6
Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. And He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noonday.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Matthew 6:33-34
Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 19:27-29
Peter answered and said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" And Jesus said to them,... "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life."

Luke 16:10, 13
He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much... No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Philippians 3:8
I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus me Lord... and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ.

James 1:2-4, 22
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have it perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing... But prove yourselves doers of the words, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

1 Peter 3:22
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior.

 Contentment [Return to Top]

Contentment does not mean that you have a huge financial problem that you just suffer through, with a big smile on your face. Being financially content means you are happy with what God has given you and you are not complaining over all the things He has not given you.  It is having the ability to change what you can, and giving God the things you cannot change. In good and bad you should know God is in control and to put your trust into him. If you can learn to be content with both good and bad you will live a much happier life.

Job 1:21
He said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return there, The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Job 2:10
He said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we accept good from God and not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Psalm 37:16
Better is the little of the righteous than the abundance of many wicked.

Psalms 119:57
The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Thy words.

Proverbs 15:16
Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and turmoil with it.

Proverbs 27:7
A sated man loathes honey, but to a famished man any bitter thing is sweet.

Proverbs 30:7-9
Two things I asked of Thee, do not refuse me before I die: keep deception and lies far from me, give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is my portion, lest I be full and deny Thee and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or lest I be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God.

Ecclesiastes 5:12
The sleep of the working man is pleasant, whether he eats little or much. But the full stomach of the rich does not allow him to sleep.

Matthew 8:20
Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."

Luke 3:14
Some soldiers were questioning him, saying, "And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages."

Acts 20:30-35
I have coveted no one's silver or gold or clothes. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the works of the Lord Jesus, the He Himself said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

Philippians 4:11-14
Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Nevertheless, you have done well to share with me in my affliction.

Colossians 3:2
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 3:3
Not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, uncontentious, free from the love of money.

1 Timothy 6:6-8
Godliness is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

Hebrews 13:5
Let your character be free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you."

1 Peter 5:2
Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness.

2 Peter 1:5-6
Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge; and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness.[Return to Top]

Counsel of Others [Return to Top]

God speaks about a person being wise if they seek counsel from others. He also speaks of going to too many people for counsel can lead you astray. There has to be a balance. You want to seek counsel from someone who has your same values; but do not follow their advice exactly, rather use their counsel in order to find God's direction for your life.

Psalm 1:1-2
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, now stand in the path of sinner, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.

Proverbs 1:5
A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.

Proverbs 9:9
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will still be wiser, teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.

Proverbs 11:14
Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Proverbs 12:1
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he hates reproof is stupid.

Proverbs 12:15
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

Proverbs 12:17
He who speaks the truth tells what is right, but a false witness, deceit.

Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety in the heart of a man weighs it down, but a good word makes it glad.

Prepare plans by consultation, and make war by wise guidance.

Proverbs 24:6
By wise guidance you will wage war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.

Proverbs 27:9-10
Oil and perfume make the heart glad, so a man's counsel is sweet to his friend. Do not forsake your own friend or your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity; better is a neighbor who is near than a brother far away.

Ecclesiastes 4:13
A poor, yet wise lad is better than an old and foolish king who no longer knows how to receive instruction.

Matthew 18:15-17

If your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. Bit if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer

Covetousness [Return to Top]

God does not want His children looking at what other people have and wishing they had the same. God is not against us being wealthy, but He is against us being covetous. If you are constantly wishing you had what someone else has or working purely to get what other people have, you will live a very empty life. Covetousness goes hand in hand with selfishness, greed, and even ruthlessness; these should not be characteristics Christians possess. We need to be unselfish, giving, and humble.

Exodus 20:17
"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

1 Corinthians 5:11
But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

1 Corinthians 6:10
Thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:5
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person-such a man is an idolater-has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Our honesty is directly related to how much God can use us.  We must never get caught up in dishonest things or people no matter how easy it might be.  In the bible it talks about honesty being the whole truth. There is no little white lie; a lie is a lie in God's eyes. We should always be honest no matter how hard it can be or no matter how hard the outcome could be. We should be honest in every little area of our lives, even with very small things.

Genesis 30:32-33
Such shall be my wages. So my honesty will answer for me later, when you come concerning my wages. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, will be considered stolen.

Exodus 18:21
Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them, as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, or fifties and of tens.

Leviticus 19:12
You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord.

Leviticus 19:35-36
You shall do no wrong in judgment, in measurement of weight, or capacity. You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Deuteronomy 17:15-17
You shall surely set a king over you whom the Lord your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman. Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the Lord has said to you, "You shall never again return that way." Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

Proverbs 3:3-4
Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.

Proverbs 10:9
He who walks in integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out.

Proverbs 10:31-32
The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, but the perverted tongue will be cut out. The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked, what is perverted.

Proverbs 12:5
The thoughts of the righteous are just, but the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.

Proverbs 14:2
He who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord, but he who is crooked in his ways despises Him.

Proverbs 22:1
A good name is more desired than great riches, favor is better than silver and gold.

Proverbs 28:6
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity, than he who is crooked though he be rich.

Matthew 12:35
The good man out of his good treasure brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth what is evil.

Paying Vows [Return to Top]

A good definition of a vow is "an earnest promise to pledge that binds one to perform in a certain manner." The bible speaks very clearly about keeping or vows. Essentially when you give your word to either God or man you are obligated to keep your word to the best that you can.  When we give our word financially, we must pay.

Numbers 30:2
If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his words; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
Deuteronomy 23:21
When you make a vow to the Lord your God, you shall not delay to pay it, for it would be sin in you, and the Lord your God will surely require it of you.
Deuteronomy 23:23
You shall be careful to perform what goes out from your lips, just as you have voluntarily vowed to the Lord your God, what you have promised.
Psalm 22:25
From Thee comes my praise in the great assembly; I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.
Psalm 50:14-15
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High; and call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.

 Ecclesiastes 5:4

When you make a vow to God, do not be late in paying it, for He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow!
Ecclesiastes 5:5
It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

Positive Attitudes [Return to Top]

If you will trust in God, if you are thankful for what God blesses you with, and you ask God how to use the things he provides for you, then you will have a positive attitude. We should always be positive about where we are financially and we should give praise when God blesses others, even if they have more then us. If we can be thankful for other people's prosperity then we have a positive attitude on finances.

Joshua 24:15
Choose for yourselves today whom you will serve...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Proverbs 16:2
All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives.

Proverbs 21:3
To do righteousness and justice is desired by the Lord rather than sacrifice.
Romans 8:28
We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
1 John 2:15-16
Do not love the world, now the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.[Return to Top]

Stewardship [Return to Top]

A steward is someone who will oversee somebody else's property. If you have the correct understanding of stewardship then you know God's will for finances. We are stewards of God. He can give us as little or as much as He chooses, but it will never be ours to own.  Showing your stewardship is not by how much you give, but by your attitude and what you do when there is not a lot to give. Giving God total control of our finances and taking on our role as stewards will give you financial peace.

Proverbs 11:24
There is one who scatters, yet increases all the more, and there is one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want.
Matthew 6:19-21,24,33
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. No one can server two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
Matthew 25:21
His master said to him. "Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things, enter into the joy of your master."

Matthew 25:45
Then He will answer them saying, "Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me."
Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, they will pour into your lap. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.
Luke 12:22-23, 29-31, 33-34
Do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. And do not seek what you shall, and what you shall drink, and do not keep worrying. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows you need these things. But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. Sell your possessions, and give to charity. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
1 Corinthians 4:1-2
Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.... It is required of stewards that one by found trustworthy.

1 Timothy 6: 18-19
Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.

Thankfulness [Return to Top]

God wants us to be thankful for everything and be thankful always. When we are going through a tough time financially be thankful for the things God has given you and give thanks for what God can teach you during the tough times.  Satan loves to make us discontent and unthankful by comparing ourselves to others who may have more or better then what we may have. Do not let what others have affect you, and always be thankful for what the Lord has blessed you with.

Psalm 119:14
I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

Psalm 119:72
The law of Thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
Psalm 119:127
Therefore, I love Thy commandments above gold, yes, above fine gold.
Proverbs 18:23
The poor man utters supplications, but the rich man answers roughly.
2 Corinthians 6:10
As sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.
Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
James 1:2-4
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Trust [Return to Top]

Do you think you could trust God 100% with your finances? Will we give away what we have as a result of having nothing left? God wants us to trust Him completely with everything we have including our money. He promises to supply our every need if we trust Him too. At first God gives us little to trust Him with, but as we practice our trust and faith in Him, He will supply more and more.

2 Chronicals 25:6-9
He hired also 100,000 valiant warriors out of Israel for on hundred talents of silver. But a man of God came to him saying, "O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel now with any of the sons of Ephraim. But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle; yet God will bring you down before the enemy, for God has power to help and to bring down." And Amaziah said to the man of God, "But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?" And the man of God answered, "The Lord has much more to give you than this."

Job 5:24
You will know that your tent is secure, for you will visit your adobe and fear no loss.

Job 23:12
I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Psalm 32:10
Many are the sorrows of the wicked; but he who trusts in the Lord, lovingkindness shall surround him.
Psalm 37:7-9
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret, it leads only to evildoing. For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land.

Psalm 112:1
Praise the Lord! How blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.

"The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "Therefore I have hope in Him."

Micah 6:8
He has told you, O Man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"
Matthew 6:25-34
For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; now for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow. Neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span? And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil now do they spin, yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these. Bit if God so arrays the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more do so for you, O men of little faith? Or what shall we drink? Or with what shall we clothe ourselves? For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 7:9-11
What man is there among you, when his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone? Or if he shall ask for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him?
Matthew 10:29-30
Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Matthew 21:21-22
Jesus answered and said tot hem, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith, and do not doubt, you shall not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, "Be taken up and cast into the sea," it shall happen. And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive.
Mark 11:24
Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they shall be granted you.
Luke 12:25
Which of you by being anxious can ass a single cubit to his life's span?
Luke 14:33
So therefore, no one of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.
John 6:27
Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man shall give to you, for on Him the Father, even God, has set His seal.
John 12:25-26
He who loves his life loses it; and he who hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall My servant also be; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
Philippians 4:6
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
1 Peter 1:7
Rejoice that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Wisdom [Return to Top]

When problem arise in our life, the first thing we need to look for and seek for is wisdom. Ask God for wisdom. We don't need to ask for more money or more control we need to ask for wisdom. Wisdom is essential in dealing with issues that seem too big for our control. God's word talks about God giving us wisdom if we trust in Him. God promises that if we ask for anything according to His will, and if we truly believe it will be given, God will give it to us. This is how we can gain wisdom from God with our finances. Wisdom is vital when it comes to making decisions financially.

1 King 10:7
But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard.
Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the Lord if the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 3:13-19
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who embrace her; those who lay hold of her will be blessed. By wisdom the Lord laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place.
Proverbs 14:18
The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

Proverbs 16:16
How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!
Proverbs 18:15
The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.
Proverbs 20:15
Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.
Proverbs 24:3-4
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.
Proverbs 29:3
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
Proverbs 30:7-9
"Two things I ask of you, O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
Ecclesiastes 4:13
Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to take warning.
Ecclesiastes 6:8
What advantage has a wise man over a fool? What does a poor man gain by knowing how to conduct himself before others?
Ecclesiastes 7:12
Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor.
Ecclesiastes 9:15-16
Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. So I said, "Wisdom is better than strength." But the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.
James 3:17
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
Revelation 5:11-12
Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!"
